First Book of 2018 Read

In my time this week, I have finished reading my first “new” novel of 2018. By new, naturally, I mean that I had not yet read it. The book was apparently published approximately seven years ago.

The book was called “Theft of Swords”, and it was a set of two rather droll fantasy stories starring a Mercenary duo.

Pros: The characters were amusing. The author (Michael J. Sullivan) particularly did the banter well.

Cons: The plot(s) was (were?) reasonably intuitive. If a book is supposed to be a maze, where you are not sure what is coming next, then this one had a fairly straightforward set of branches, fairly visible ahead of time. Whereas some books have plot twists that are well laid retrospectively, this one makes it clear what the twists are as the author builds towards them.

However, the second part of “Theft of Swords” was (somewhat) better done, and I am looking forward to reading the second volume. The author is telling a fun story, and the characters are amusing with witty banter.

If you find it at a library, or happen to have extra to spend on books and no purpose, it is worth considering for a pleasant piece of fluff.

As you are aware, it is now 2018. As you may also be aware, the Californian city of Pasadena had a parade yesterday in honor of the new year: The Rose Parade.

Ooh, yes!

So, I’m butting in with a random tangent. Just note that it really is the “Rose Parade”. Or, “The Tournament of Roses Parade” if you’re being fancy. It’s absolutely, definitely NOT the “Rose bowl parade”. That is a nonexistent thin that people who don’t know any better make up. In fact, the Rose Bowl game wasn’t founded until well after the original Rose Parade… and I think was named for the Tournament of Roses Parade (or the Rose Parade.)

As I was saying, the parade occurred yesterday. It is occasionally a touch difficult to track down for viewing. However, it appears that the KTLA Broadcast may still be available online.

The parade itself is approximately two hours long, and well worth the time, if you have it.

Yesterday, I was (FINALLY) able to finish reading Oathbringer. I can therefore now tell you that I have read it, and really enjoyed it. I also continue to very highly recommend the Stormlight Archives series by Brandon Sanderson.

And if you are able to, I also recommend reading Warbreaker. Not only is it available for free from the author’s website, but also it gets referenced in Oathbringer. (One of the fantastic things Sanderson does is set a number of his stories in the same universe… and then have crossovers. Or the equivalent thereof.)

It may not come as a surprise to you that I enjoy the YouTube channel “cinemasins.” It is a channel that looks at popular movies and snarkily points out various mistakes, plot-holes, and other potentially questionable decisions.

Two aspects that Cinemasins frequently includes are the “repeated elements” sins, and the “Sins itself” sins. The first occur when there is a trope that is overused. (For example: “Dramatic Stares” to indicate significance of an event.) The second occurs when the movie itself points out potential sins.

Much to my amusement, the new Jurassic World movie has released a trailer preview that may count for both. It has a repeated element, and by merit of the preview being created by the movie’s creators, I personally think this is a case of the producers “sinning themselves.”

I am extraordinarily excited. Today, Oathbringer is released!

If you are not sure what I am talking about: Oathbringer is book 3 of a series I am greatly enjoying, called the Stormlight Archives. I recommended Book One a while ago.

If you have not yet read “Way of Kings” (book one) or “Words of Radiance” (book two), I recommend spending your free time this week doing so. I have not yet read Book Three, but I am confident it will also be fantastic.

The “McRib Tracker” apparently exists

I recently learned something, thanks to a reader.

1) McDonald’s sells McRibs, which are apparently quite popular among a certain crowd.

2) There is an actual tracker for the McRib, which lets you identify where you can purchase one, and where the most recent McRib was purchased. (It might simply update based on users updating the website. I am not entirely certain.)

Regardless, I found it… interesting.
